Since Tim and Carissa Fairbrother first opened their doors for business in 2008, RIVAL Wealth has continued to flourish. They pride themselves on their business reputation as being one of the top places to work in the Wairarapa. Staff retention is very high, with the key being flexible working hours to fit in with family life.   With the recent building extension of their head office now completed, they’re now on track to extend business growth, opening an office in Wellington.

We decided to ask their staff why some of them chose to move to the Wairarapa and what is the secret to a happy work place environment.   Here’s what some of them had to say.

ANNA KEANE

“My husband and I initially moved to the Wairarapa when we had our first child so one of us could stay at home.  A smaller mortgage meant that I could care full time for our girls. One of the added bonuses of living here is that we have always loved the outdoors.  Having worked in recruitment for a number of years in Auckland, I was sceptical about finding work in Masterton.  I was surprised at RIVAL Wealth’s flexibility and  employment opportunities.  The Wairarapa really does have it all!”

AARON TREVEAN

“I grew up in Upper Hutt, and as I got older I moved closer to Wellington where I worked.  As a child I have fond memories of family trips to Queen Elizabeth Park, playing with friends at Lake Ferry and junior football tournaments at Douglas Villa.  As an adult I looked over this side of the hill and liked the quieter family lifestyle the Wairarapa offers.  Less traffic, better weather and the huge variety of family events appealed. When we managed to get a new home with less debt than what we had in Wellington it became a no brainer to move”.

MARIANNE PATON-SENTCH

“The main reason we moved here from Auckland was the desire to have more quality time to spend with our children and have less debt.  My husband’s commute meant most days he was barely getting to see the kids by the time he got home.  The Wairarapa has allowed us a greater work/life balance and now we’re out  doing fun things and enjoying life.”

ANNA SCHOFER

“We chose to move to the Wairarapa as I was working in Wellington City 5 days a week from 6am to 6pm.  With a young baby, we thought there must be a better way of life.  Whilst the move was a big change and a bit of uncertainty we knew the benefits could be great and we were right!! We are now both working part time and living in our own house in Martinborough with our two kids allowing us a lot more time as a family.  I love the flexibility, as it means I don’t miss family events.”

Tim Fairbrother – the business founder, was quick to point out that getting the right people with a great attitude has made their workplace very efficient and productive. “Many businesses are now starting to realise working 8-5 is not always the best solution so don’t be afraid to look outside the square”.
